Israeli Gov’t Plans to Build Thousands of Housing Units on the Ruins of the Qalandia Airport

Over the last few years, the Israeli occupation is doing its utmost to build thousands of settlement units in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, to block any political solutions or geographic contiguity for the establishment of a Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital. Millions of NIS has been allocated by the Israeli Ministry of Finance to construct a settlement neighborhood for the religious Jews on the ruins of the Qalandia airport north of Jerusalem and part of the Kafr-Aqeb lands aiming at connecting the settlement neighborhoods located north of Jerusalem “Pisgat Ze’ev” and “Neve Jacob” with the settlements south of Ramallah, Tel Zion,” “Adam” and “Kochav Jacob.” Worth mentioning here that, the airport was supposed to be a Palestinian one, which the Palestinians have demanded to be handed over. Thus, the Israeli government did and still does it best to advance work there to guarantee the separation of occupied East Jerusalem from other Palestinian cities. Israeli Housing Minister, Yoav Galent siad: “The project is considered as an excellent Zionist achievement and of highest importance. Adding, “Funds were allocated soon for it.

The Jerusalem occupation Municipality will approve the construction of about 700 housing units, as the Local Planning and Building Committee will discuss the addition of 500 housing units in the Ramat Shlomo settlement and 200 housing units in the Ramot settlement. The expansion of the Ramot settlement to the north-eastern slopes of the occupied Jerusalem will be extended to 40% of the area of the Ramot settlement, which will be used as public areas, Jewish religious institutions, commercial facades and public parks. “Since the entry of the Trump administration, we have no delays and we are building all over Jerusalem,” said Turjeman, head of the Planning and Construction Committee of the Municipality.

In the meantime, the Jerusalem Occupation Municipality approved the construction of 176 Jewish housing units at the Neve Tzion in the Jabal-Mukaber neighborhood, southeast of occupied Jerusalem to become the largest settlement outpost in the heart of Palestinian neighborhoods in Jerusalem. It should be noted that Chemini Co. has filed building licenses on “land owned by foreign companies registered in Australia, the Cayman Islands in the Caribbean Sea and the United States. Moreover, the Australian Jewish businessman, Quinn Bramaiser, stands behind the company, while the Israeli businessman, Rami Levy, owns 15% of them. At the Netanahu’s office, it was announced that Bibhas Vallerstein, one of the most prominent settlers’ leaders, was appointed as chairman of the committee, which will be responsible for the construction of illegal settlement outposts and houses built without building permits in settlements built in the occupied West Bank.

Israeli government ministers have been informed that the proposed law, named, “Greater Jerusalem,” which includes the annexation of settlements out of the Green Line and adjacent to Jerusalem, will be submitted next Sunday to the Ministerial Committee of Legislation. The Committee is expected to ratify the proposed law and then to be referred to the Knesset for approval, under which Ma’aleh Adumim, Betar Illit, Givat Ze’ev, Efrat, other settlements of “Gush Etzion”, will be affiliated to Jerusalem occupation municipality, thus thousands of settlers will be added to Jerusalem.

On the other hand, PM Netanyahu said he would invest NIS 800,000,000 to develop infrastructure, such as paving 5 streets for settlers and making a road around the ArOub camp between Gush Etzion and Hebron, A bypass road around Huwwara from the Tapuah junction to Nablus and Qalandia Atarot and a street around the Al-Luban town stretches from “Ariel to Giv’at Kouh” as well as doubling the width of road 446 between Modiin and Alit and lighting the streets leading to settlements in the West Bank. In the Ramallah Governorate, the Israeli occupation army decided to confiscate 2160 donums of the Nabi Saleh and Umm Safa and Jibiya and Deir Nizam villages’ lands west of the city of Ramallah, for security purposes.

It is expected that the Ministerial Committee for Legislative Affairs at the Knesset, to approve the proposal law for reconstruction of 4 settlements evacuated in the northern West Bank occupied in 2005. It is noted that the project is supported by the majority members of the Committee, in addition to giving Netanyahu the green light to pass the law.

Former Israeli Security Minister, Moshe Ya’alon joined Labor Party Chairman, Avi Gabbai, saying it was impossible to achieve any political solution with the Palestinians; they not only opposed evacuating settlers from the West Bank, but demanded the addition of 1 million settlers.

For its part, the National Bureau noted in previous reports that bulldozing areas around the settlements evacuated in the north of the West Bank continued and witnessed continuous incursions by settlers under the protection of the occupation army.
